Brody McCullough earns NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week honors

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University All-American right-hander Brody McCullough picked up his second award of the day Tuesday afternoon, being named the Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). McCullough earns the regional accolade for the first time this season and fourth time in his career.

McCullough was overpowering Friday night, leading #2 Wingate to a 14-2 victory over UVA Wise. He struck out 17 in just 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing two hits without giving up a run on the night. McCullough threw 89 pitches, with 61 strikes.

McCullough moved to 6-1 on the year with his performance Friday night, with 17 of the 19 outs recorded coming via strikeout. His first eight outs were strikeouts, striking out the side in the first and second before a flyout ended the third. McCullough struck out the side in the fourth, then allowed a leadoff single in the fifth, which he followed by striking out three straight. After a groundout and walk in the sixth, McCullough notched his 15th and 16th strikeouts. He needed just three pitches in the top of the seventh to punch out his 17th batter of the night. He left the game after that at-bat, with Wingate on top 10-0

McCullough leads the SAC and ranks eighth in the nation with a 0.95 ERA, striking out 75 in 38 innings of work. He leads the SAC and ranks sixth in the nation in strikeouts, while also leading the conference and ranking second nationally with 17.76 strikeouts per nine innings. In his last five starts, McCullough has gone 29 innings without allowing an earned run on just 13 hits, striking out 51.

#2 Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Francis Marion for a 6 p.m. start. The Bulldogs return home this weekend, hosting a three-game series against Newberry, starting Friday at 6 p.m. then wrapping it up Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
