Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University men's swimming team finished second in the Kellianne Nagy Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Sunday. The Bulldog women's swimming team earned a fifth-place showing. Seven men's teams and 10 women's squads participated in the three-day event, hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.
The host Royals won both competitions. On the men's side, Queens was followed by Wingate and Nova Southeastern. Emmanuel (Ga.) and Catawba filled out the men's top five. In the women's event, Nova Southeastern, James Madison, UNC Asheville and Wingate completed the top five.
The Bulldog women defeated Division I Duquesne and La Salle. Both Wingate teams outlasted Division II rivals Catawba, Emmanuel and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad Bulldogs are listed in the top 10 of the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) NCAA Division II top 25 dual meet rankings. The Bulldog women are No. 7, while the Wingate men are No. 10.
What They Are Saying
Wingate team captain
Lucie Andrews
"The Fall Frenzy was a great meet for us this year. The team energy continues to be strong as we push ourselves and each other to be the best that we can be. There were great swims across both the men's and women's teams—we had many swimmers swim season-best times, which is a big achievement whilst we are still two weeks out from our midseason meet at SCAD Savannah."
"Our relays are also doing really well, as they continue to rank highly within D2. I'm excited to see how strong we can finish this season as a team considering the success we have already seen so far!"
Wingate team captain
Gabriel da Costa
"I'm very happy and proud with the team's performance this weekend. I can't wait for our mid-season competition at SCAD Savannah. WU WHAT? WU SWIM!"
Wingate team captain
Hana Kubalova
"It was a very good meet for both the men's and the women's teams. Our first three-day meet of the season and we have shown that even longer sessions are not a problem for us. The energy was amazing and it shows that even though we might be more tired on the last day, we still come together as a team and cheer for each other and hold each other accountable! We are at a great point at this time of the season. I can't wait to see what we can do at the SCAD Savannah Invitational in two weeks!"
Wingate team captain
Kevin Rusu
"We had a great meet! I'm proud of the team and I'm so happy to see so many personal-best and season-best times. We had a lot of NCAA B cuts, which is great. I'm not surprised, because we have practiced great the last few months! I'm so excited for the next meets."
