Charlotte, N.C.----On an evening of super-fast swims, the Wingate University men's 400 Medley Relay team saved the best for last at the inaugural South Atlantic Conference championship meet inside the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center (MCAC) Thursday night. In Thursday's final event, the Bulldogs posted a new school record with their gold-medal time of 3:11.50.
Team members included freshman
Ney Chagas Filho, sophomore
Fedor Sokolov and seniors
Frederik Oscar Moller and
Slava Ohnov. The previous school standard was 3:11.95 in the 2018 Bluegrass Mountain Conference meet by
Niklas Martin,
Giacomo Viazzo,
Sebastian Holmberg and
Lukas Kraft.
On the team leaderboards, the No. 8 Wingate men have 986 points. Carson-Newman is second with 764 points. The No. 8 Bulldog women hold a 972-859 advantage over the C-N Eagles. Wingate resumes its SAC championship meet journey Friday morning with preliminaries slated for 10 a.m. Finals on Friday evening start at 5 p.m.

Event 11
Women's 100 Butterfly
Team captains junior
Hana Kubalova and senior
Gracie Williams finished fourth (56.69) and fifth (56.88), respectively, to earn All-SAC laurels in the 100 Butterfly. Junior
Mary Heffron finished eighth (57.81). Carson-Newman senior Manon Compagner won the 100 Fly with an NCAA Division II A Cut time of 52.92.
Event 12
Men's 100 Butterfly
The Bulldogs did a wash, rinse and repeat from the morning preliminaries, sweeping the three SAC medals. Senior team captain
Slava Ohnov claimed the top spot with his triumphant time of 48.05. Senior
Frederik Oscar Moller and freshman
Balint Kovacs finished second (48.19) and third (48.56), joining Ohnov on the podium.
The three Bulldogs occupied the same positions during the morning swim. Freshman
Jonatan Carlsson and sophomore
Alex Smyre earned sixth (49.43) and seventh (49.53), respectively. Carlsson's finish gave Wingate four All-SAC performers in the event.
Event 13
Women's 400 Individual Medley
Freshman
Franziska Muhlberger dropped 8.36 seconds from her morning preliminaries time to take second place in the 400 Individual Medley with her 4:22.70 effort. Senior team captain
Lily Sanocki also improved her Thursday morning time, taking third place with a 4:24.56 mark.
Freshman
Nadia Kertynska and junior
Katherine Fronczak finished fourth (4:27.27) and sixth (4:33.16), respectively, to join Muhlberger and Sanocki on the All-SAC team. Kertynska and Fronczak also achieved season-best marks.
The Bulldogs had six student-athletes in the championship final, with sophomore
Lindsee Newman and senior
Jayci Scheff taking seventh (4:34.14) and eighth (4:35.07), respectively. Scheff's championship final mark was also a season-best effort. Carson-Newman senior Rachel Peden won the 400 IM with her time of 4:22.61.
Event 14
Men's 400 Individual Medley
Sophomore
Miguel Marcos added a silver medal to his collection, taking second place with his time of 3:53.43.
Jack Wisniewski joined his classmate on the podium, finishing third with his time of 3:56.91. The duo combined to drop almost eight seconds from their morning efforts, establishing PRs in the process.
Freshmen
Mikolaj Dobrindt and
Pablo Cabana del Amo followed the pattern, swimming season-best times to finish fourth (3:57.94) and sixth (4:02.50), respectively. The two newcomers joined the two WU sophomores on the All-SAC squad. Senior
Ian Leighninger finished seventh (4:05.58).

Women's 200 Freestyle
Sophomore
Lucie Andrews led the 'Dogs, finishing second with her personal-best time of 1:50.42. Freshman
Nina Azirovic and graduate student
Kate Agger placed third (1:50.51) and fourth (1:50.80), respectively. Azirovic achieved a season-best mark.
Junior
Amanda Wenhold was the fourth WU swimmer to make the All-SAC team in the event, finishing sixth (1:51.97). Sophomore
Marta Beesmans Barquero finished eighth (1:53.65). Carson-Newman's Compagner touched first with her gold-medal time of 1:49.11.
Event 16
Men's 200 Freestyle
Senior
Marcel Snitko touched first with a personal-best mark of 1:35.84. The Bulldogs put together their second Thursday 1-2-3 finish as sophomore
Gabriel da Costa (1:37.59) and senior team captain
Ethan Hathcock (1:37.93) joined Snitko on the podium. Hathcock's mark was a season-best effort. Kovacs gave the 'Dogs four All-SAC honorees, taking sixth place (1:41.32).
Event 17
Women's 400 Medley Relay
Wingate earned a silver medal in the evening's final race, posting a time of 3:44.79. Team members included Beesmans Barquero, Wenhold, Kubalova and sophomore
Kelsea Munro. The quartet dropped almost three seconds from its seed time. Carson-Newman lowered its seed time as well, posting a 3:42.52 mark to take the gold medal.
Event 18
Men's 400 Medley Relay
The Bulldogs shaved 6.17 seconds from their seed time on the way to their record-setting performance. The Carson-Newman Eagles finished a distant second with their silver-medal time of 3:15.07.

Wingate University
Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a laboratory of difference-making that serves more than 3,400 students in North Carolina.
