Heaven Maness has been named the Varsity Gems South Atlantic Conference softball Player of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday morning. Maness earns Player of the Week accolades for the first time this season and second time in her career.
Maness had a huge week for #16 Wingate, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 week as the 'Dogs moved to 36-9 overall and 14-4 in the SAC. She went eight-for-11 in the four games, hitting .727 with two homers, four doubles, nine RBI and seven runs scored.
Maness started her week with a monster effort in the doubleheader sweep over UNC Pembroke, driving in nine runs on the day. She went two-for-three with a double, homer, five RBI and two runs scored in game one, while going three-for-three with a double, homer and four more RBI in game two. Maness was three-for-three in game one against Limestone with a pair of doubles and three more runs scored. She scored another run in the finale against the Saints.
A two-time first team All-SAC honoree, Maness is hitting .348 this season with nine homers, five doubles and two triples, driving in 34 runs while scoring 31 times. She also has seven stolen bases in eight attempts while compiling a .621 slugging percentage.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The 'Dogs host Mars Hill Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Senior Day.
