Q&A (and more) with #WUSWIM head coach
Kevin Hennessy
Talk about swimmers who have stood out in preseason workouts…
WOMEN: "Team captain
Lucie Andrews … has looked really good in preseason workouts. She had a full summer swimming. Lucie is ready for big meets and races down the road."
"
Franziska Muhlberger … has really taken charge since being back to start her junior year. She is training well and racing much better. It is great seeing Franziska get after it the way we know she can!"
"
Elizabete Paula Ozola … has been a real pleasant surprise … she gets more and more comfortable with our system each week. Elizabete is a great racer."
MEN: "
Fernando Dehaudt … has been recovering from a broken hand … despite his temporary limitations and newness to our system, Fernando has not missed a beat during our August and September workouts."
"
Bálint Kovács … returned to school in great shape … he looks ready to make a big impact."
"
Manoel Silva … came back to school looking very strong. He had a good summer swimming back home and you can tell he did some good work. Manoel is looking very powerful in the water."
Talk about your 2024-25 schedule …
Complete 2024-25 #WUSWIM schedule
"We had an amazing Wingate Family Weekend team time trial event the last Saturday of September. We are starting with a big challenge right out of the gate with our Friday, October 4 meet at Queens University of Charlotte. We will see where we are right away!"
"The Queens dual meet is a great opener as we enter our first semester South Atlantic Conference gauntlet with an away meet at Barton (October 12) and Friday home contests against Lenoir-Rhyne (October 25, 5 p.m.) and Catawba (November 1, 5 p.m.)."
"In addition, opening the 2024-25 competition season at Queens gives us a good tune-up for the Emory Invitational (November 8-9) and Fall Frenzy (November 21-24). We will close the first semester with a huge SAC road test at Carson-Newman (December 13)."
"We are most excited about our training trip adventure to Orlando in January. We will race the University of Tampa (January 11, 2025), the defending NCAA Division II men's national champions. This will be our last official competition until the SAC championships … why not finish the regular season with the best of the best?"
You are entering your second season as #WUSWIM head coach … what is the biggest thing you learned during your first year?
"… many times, you hear from your mentors about making big decisions as the head coach; however, until you actually are sitting in the first chair and making those decisions … you really don't know the full scope."
"My No. 1 takeaway from my first season … Trust your people! … don't feel as if you have to make every decision … not every single thing needs to run by your desk. We have great assistant coaches who are more than capable of handling things as they arise."
