Bulldogs blank Barry in season opener

Box Score Miami Shores, Fla.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got a combined two-hit shutout from Kelan Hoover and Chad Harvey Thursday night, prevailing 5-0 at Barry University in NCAA Division II baseball action. Wingate starts the season 1-0, while the Bucs fall to 0-1.

- Wingate out-hit Barry 7-2
- The Bulldogs had the only three extra-base hits; all three were homers
- Wingate committed the only error of the contest
- The 'Dogs left nine on base; Barry stranded four
- The Bucs had three of the five stolen bases
- WU pitching struck out eight and walked three; Barry had 12 strikeouts and seven walks

KEY BULLDOGS

- Hoover tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits to earn the win
- Harvey followed with four no-hit frames, striking out five to notch the save
- Sean Barnett was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI
- Michael Dansky added two hits including a homer, scoring two runs and stealing a base
- Breon Ishmael also homered for the Bulldogs
- Brett Adams went two-for-five with an RBI

SIXTH INNING

- Barnett led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer to get Wingate on the board

SEVENTH INNING

- Andrew McKay was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then stole second
- He scored on an RBI single from Adams to make it 2-0
- Barnett's RBI single plated Dansky to put the 'Dogs on top by three

EIGHTH INNING

- Ishmael led off the eighth with a solo shot to right center to make it 4-0

NINTH INNING

- A solo blast to right from Dansky started the ninth inning, making the final margin 5-0

WRAPUP

- Hoover got the win, moving to 1-0 on the season
- He allowed two singles in five shutout frames, striking out three and walking two
- Harvey worked the final four innings to earn the save
- He did not allow a hit, striking out five and walking just one to finish off the win

- Wingate is back in action Friday, traveling to Lynn for a 2 p.m. start
- The 'Dogs close out the Florida trip Saturday at Nova Southeastern at 2 p.m.
