Millard, McCabe and Wiley collect major awards; nine Bulldogs earn All-SAC honors

Rock Hill, S.C.----The regular season SAC champion Wingate University Bulldogs piled up the honors Tuesday afternoon, when the South Atlantic Conference announced the regular season award winners. Megan Millard has been named the SAC Midfielder of the Year, while Kathryn McCabe is the SAC Defensive Player of the Year. Abby Wiley has been named the SAC Coach of the Year. Millard and McCabe are first team All-SAC honorees, along with Kaleigh Wilgeroth, while Krysta Churns, Riley Boone, Nelida Watson and Emily Blakely pick up second team all-conference accolades. Avery Scherer and Haley McCourt are third team All-SAC selections.

Millard has had a huge senior season for the Bulldogs, piling up 55 goals, 13 assists, 56 draw controls, 30 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers. She ranks third in the SAC in goals, fourth in points, ninth in draw controls and 14th in caused turnovers. Millard has recorded multiple points in all 17 games this season, registering four or more points nine times. She had six goals and two assists against Emory & Henry, while pouring in seven goals against Mars Hill. Millard had six goals at Catawba, while also scoring six goals in the win at Limestone that clinched the regular season SAC title for the Bulldogs.

McCabe has made a huge impact in her first season with the Bulldogs, piling up 118 draw controls, 59 ground balls and 45 caused turnovers, adding a goal and an assist. The sophomore leads the SAC in draw controls and caused turnovers, while ranking second in ground balls. McCabe ranks in the top 20 nationally in all three categories. She has nine games with seven or more draw controls, piling up 12 at Emory & Henry and 11 at Lee. McCabe has notched multiple CTs in 13 contests, including six caused turnovers against Florida Tech in her first game as a Bulldog. She had five CTs, five ground balls and six draw controls against Seton Hill, while notching four CTs, eight draw controls and three ground balls against Mars Hill.

Wiley is the SAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in the last five years, leading Wingate to a third straight regular season SAC title. The Bulldogs are 16-1 overall and 11-0 in the SAC this year, currently ranked 15th in the IWLCA top 25 poll. Wingate leads the nation in caused turnovers, while ranking third nationally in assists, win percentage and scoring defense, fourth in scoring margin, fifth in draw control percentage, sixth in points per game and seventh in scoring offense.

Wilgeroth is having another big year for the Bulldogs, piling up 36 goals and 28 assists to go along with 18 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. She leads the team in assists, while ranking second goals and points. Wilgeroth ranks fifth in the SAC in assists and seventh in points. She has notched at least one point in every game this year, with multiple points in 15 of 17 contests including 11 games with four or more points. Wilgeroth followed a four-goal, two-assist effort against IUP with two goals and four assists against Tusculum. She piled up six goals and an assist in the victory over Anderson.

Churns has been another key factor in one of the country's top defenses, helping the Bulldogs lead the nation in caused turnovers and rank third in scoring defense. She has started every game this season, piling up 22 caused turnovers and 36 ground balls on the year. Churns registered five CTs and seven ground balls against Seton Hill, while notching three CTs and three ground balls at LMU.

Blakely has turned in another impressive season in the midfield, registering 19 goals, 14 assists, 24 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers and five draw controls. The graduate student has notched multiple points in 11 contests this season, going for three goals and an assist against Alabama Huntsville, while registering three CTs, three ground balls, a goal and an assist against Mars Hill. Blakely had a goal, two assists, four CTs and three ground balls against UVA Wise. She had two goals and an assist in the key back-to-back SAC wins over Anderson and Limestone to help the 'Dogs clinch the outright SAC title.

Boone has been huge for the Bulldogs this season, starting all 17 games in goal. The senior leads the SAC and ranks third in the nation in goals-against average, while also ranking third in the conference in save percentage. She has piled up 110 saves on the year, notching eight or more saves nine times. Boone had 10 saves against Alabama Huntsville, while piling up 13 saves at Mount Olive. She had 16 saves in the 10-5 win over IUP, while collecting eight saves against Anderson.

Watson is an all-conference honoree for the second straight season. She has registered 31 goals and 14 assists on the year, adding 14 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Watson ranks third on the team in goals and points. She has notched multiple points in 14 of Wingate's 17 games this year, going for three goals and an assist against Lee and four goals at Lenoir-Rhyne. Watson had three straight three-goal games against IUP, Tusculum and Newberry, while pouring in five goals against UVA Wise.

Scherer has been another key factor in the Wingate midfield this season, notching 27 goals, nine assists, 20 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. She has registered at least one point in 15 games this season, going for four goals, an assist and four ground balls against Mars Hill. Scherer had back-to-back games with two goals and an assist against Catawba and UVA Wise, while pouring in five goals in the regular season finale against Coker.

McCourt has also played a huge role in the league's top defense. The senior has started all 17 games, registering 20 caused turnovers and 20 ground balls while helping the Bulldogs post a 7.18 goals-against average to rank third in the nation. She has at least one caused turnover in 11 games this year, notching three CTs and two ground balls against Seton Hill, followed by collecting four CTs and three ground balls at Lenoir-Rhyne. McCourt also caused three turnovers against UVA Wise.

The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 5 p.m. in the SAC Tournament semifinals. The regular season SAC champs are the number one seed in the SAC Tournament. The winner of Wednesday's semifinal contest advances to the SAC championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. in Matthews.
