Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.----The Wingate University men's golf team posted a first-round score of three-over-par 291 in the NCAA Division II National Championships at the PGA National Resort Monday. Wingate is tied for ninth place with defending national champion Colorado Christian. Junior
Lewis Beeden is tied for seventh place, thanks to his opening round two-under-par 70.
St. Mary's (Texas) is the overnight leader, thanks to an impressive nine-under-par 279. On the individual leader board, Lee (Tenn.) redshirt junior
Bennett McNabb tops the charts with his six-under-par 66. Twenty teams and 108 student-athletes are competing in this year's national championship event.
NCAA Championships Round 1 quick hits
- Wingate has two student-athletes inside the top 11 (and ties)
- Beeden's brilliant first round included a blistering six birdies
- He birdies all four par fives as well as holes No. 8 and No. 9
- Beeden played the "Bear Trap" (holes 15-17) at three-over-par
- He finished strong with a birdie on No. 18 (par five, 556 yards)

Brandon Skidmore had a one-under-par 71 Monday

Looking ahead to Tuesday's round two
The Bulldogs will have an early start to their day two, as Storer makes the team's first appearance at 8:25 a.m. For the second consecutive day, Wingate is paired with Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) and Missouri-St. Louis. The Bulldogs' tee times are split in 11-minute intervals with Hyland occupying the five-spot at 9:09 a.m.
