Norfolk, Va.----Thirty-two Wingate University swimming student-athletes are Scholar All-Americans, as named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Both WU swimming squads were named Scholar All-America teams by the same organization.

To qualify for Scholar All-America recognition, the student-athlete must have a 3.500 (or higher) grade point average (2025 spring semester GPA or 2024-25 academic year GPA) and have competed at the NCAA Division II championship meet. The CSCAA also recognizes a second team squad for those not qualifying for NCAAs. Teams are recognized if they maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher during the 2025 spring semester.

What They Are Saying
Wingate head men's and women's swimming coach Kevin Hennessy

"I continue to be impressed by our teams. The work they put in the pool, but also the classroom really shows their dedication to everything they do. I know the confidence and mindset these teams have is only going to continue to grow."

"We continue to set the foundation for strong performance at a national level, both athletically and academically. It's a great year when we are ranked in the top 10 for our achievements in the pool and out of the pool. We are so proud of our men and women and can't wait to have them all back on campus for the coming season."

Wingate men's swimming rising senior team captain Ney Chagas Filho

"As a finance major at Wingate University, I've been thoroughly impressed by how the academic program has surpassed my expectations. Professors foster an interactive environment, encouraging critical thinking and collaboration through case studies and projects that mirror industry challenges. The small class sizes allow for personalized guidance and resources like the Center for Vocation, Internships and Career Services have been instrumental in connecting academic learning to career opportunities, ensuring I'm well-prepared for the finance world."

"One professor who has been particularly impactful is Dr. Barry Cuffe. His teaching style, often described as that of a 'math coach,' challenges students to surpass expectations while making quantitative concepts like IF statements and data analysis practical and engaging."

Wingate women's swimming rising senior team captain Franziska Muhlberger

"I am majoring in biology with double minors in chemistry and psychology, expecting to graduate in May 2026. Wingate has helped me pursue and achieve my academic goals by fostering a culture that values both excellence and balance. The support from faculty - especially in the biology department - has been great…and I've felt encouraged to push myself in the classroom while staying disciplined in the pool. One professor who has made a lasting impact on me is Dr. Brett Schofield. His passion for teaching and genuine investment in students' success has inspired me to approach my studies with the same commitment I bring to the pool."

"The combination of personalized attention in small classes, challenging coursework and a community that celebrates academic achievement has made my time at Wingate incredibly rewarding so far. Being part of a team that excels both in competition and in the classroom has been motivating and uplifting and I am especially excited to enter my senior year as one of the captains of the women's swim team."
