Wingate men are first, women are second after first day of SAC championships

Kingsport, Tenn.----The nationally-ranked Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams set two South Atlantic Conference meet records in the SAC championship meet at the Kingsport Aquatic Center Wednesday night. The Bulldog men are first, while the WU women are second after the first day of competition.
 
Sophomore Yassine Sebbata set a new SAC meet record in the men's 50 Freestyle, thanks to his triumphant time of 19.73. The Wingate women's 200 Medley Relay quartet posted a new SAC meet record with its gold-medal time of 1:41.20. Both previous marks were held by Wingate.
 
On the team charts, the Bulldog men lead the Catawba Indians 458-394. The Wingate women trail their Catawba counterparts 439-410.5. The Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad WU student-athletes return to the pool for day two preliminaries Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Finals on Thursday evening will start at 5 p.m.
 
Wingate's Wednesday PM highlights
 
Event 1
Women's 1000 Freestyle
 
Livia Kingsland took fourth place, thanks to her D2B cut time of 10:19.92. Grace Wilson and Emily Shuttleworth finished fifth (10:32.53) and sixth (10:35.49), respectively.
 
Event 2
Men's 1000 Freestyle
 
The Bulldog men had four swimmers finish in the top five. Fernando Dehaudt finished second with his silver-medal time of 9:14.04. Damir Ipkaev was third, claiming the bronze medal with his time of 9:14.92. Wingate's top four posted D2B cut times Wednesday.
 
Event 3
Women's 200 Individual Medley
 
Wingate had three of the top four finishers. Nisa Gul Serdar took second place with her D2B cut time of 2:04.34. Annika Luce was third. Luce posted a time of 2:06.31.
 
Event 4
Men's 200 Individual Medley
 
Andreas Carrascal and Artur Vilela de Queiroz finished second (1:49.98) and third (1:50.49), respectively. The Bulldogs had four student-athletes finish in the top six.
 
Event 5
Women's 50 Freestyle
 
Natalia Dwojak finished second, thanks to her silver-medal time of 23.26. Three Wingate student-athletes finished in the top six Wednesday.
 
Event 6
Men's 50 Freestyle
 
Yassine Sebbata snagged a gold medal with his 19.73 SAC meet record time. The previous mark was held by Wingate's Slava Ohnov, who swam a 19.85 in the 2023 SAC championship meet.
 
Event 7
Women's 200 Medley Relay
 
Wingate touched first with its new SAC meet record time of 1:41.20. The Bulldogs held the previous mark of 1:41.79, established in 2023. Natalia Dwojak swam in both events. On Wednesday, she was joined by Vera Karlsson, Mathilda Sandberg and Nina Azirovic.
 
Event 8
Men's 200 Medley Relay
 
The Bulldogs finished second with their silver-medal time of 1:28.76. Sebbata swam the anchor leg. He was joined Ney Chagas Filho, Artur Vilela de Queiroz and Mike Topchanalis.
