Evonne Bruestle earns conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for second time this season

Greenville, S.C.----Wingate University sophomore Evonne Bruestle has collected Conference Carolinas flag football Defensive Player of the Week accolades, league officials announced Wednesday afternoon. Bruestle earns Player of the Week recognition for the second time in the last three weeks.

Bruestle turned in another monster performance as the Bulldogs prevailed 32-27 at Emmanuel to claim a share of the regular season conference title. She piled up 17 tackles on the day, which included 11 tackles for loss with 10 sacks. Bruestle added a pair of pass break-ups on the afternoon. 

Bruestle has had a huge season in year one of Wingate flag football. She leads the team with 69 tackles, which includes a team-best 38 tackles for loss, along with a team-high 34 tackles. She has also notched three pass break-ups and a pair of interceptions. Bruestle has also made a big offensive impact with 50 receptions for a team-high 649 yards, scoring nine touchdowns on the year while adding a team-best 13 yards per catch.

The Bulldogs are the number one seed in this week's Conference Carolinas tournament. Wingate faces Mount St. Mary's Friday at noon in the tourney opener. The winner advances to the semifinals Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The title game is set for Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. Every game will take place at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, N.C.
