Paul Grammaticopoulos had the biggest day of his eight-game football career as the Bulldogs earned a wild 51-41 SAC victory over host Catawba College Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The former Wingate soccer standout hit three-of-three field goals (26, 19, 38) and averaged 62.4 yards on 10 kick-offs. Thanks to the efforts of Grammaticopoulos and his teammates, the Bulldogs won the field position battle by 14 yards (W47 to C33).
On the season, Grammaticopoulos is four-of-five on field goals and one-of-one on extra points. He averages 63.2 yards on 47 kick-offs with five touchbacks. In addition, Grammaticopoulos has four special team tackles, with solo stops in SAC victories over Carson-Newman and Newberry. Wingate (5-3 overall, 4-1 SAC) visits Lenoir-Rhyne (4-3 overall, 3-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon. Kick-off at Moretz Stadium is slated for 2 p.m. The last time the two teams played in Hickory, the Bulldogs edged the Bears 50-49 on Oct. 10, 2009. Wingate mounted a 17-point fourth quarter comeback in the road contest.
