Wingate University redshirt senior running back Nelson Woods rushed for season-high totals of 26 attempts, 173 yards and two touchdowns as the home-standing Bulldogs defeated Mars Hill College 48-29 Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
 
Woods and the Bulldog offense outdueled the South Atlantic Conference’s leading rusher, Mars Hill junior Jonas Randolph. The top rusher in the league, Randolph had 140 yards and two scores, compared to 173 yards and two scores for Woods. The Lawndale Burns product had a 68-yard TD run to give Wingate a momentum-changing 28-14 lead midway through the third quarter.
 
Wingate’s all-time leading rusher, Woods has 3654 yards on 771 carries for his Bulldog career. He has 17 100-yard games during his illustrious Wingate tenure. His best performance was Nov. 8, 2008, when he posted career-highs in attempts (30), yards (205) and touchdowns (three) against Mars Hill.
