Bulldogs calm Tornados 82-56 Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----Four Bulldogs scored in double figures and the Wingate defense held Brevard to 17.7 percent shooting from the field to secure an 82-56 victory in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 6-9 on the year and 0-6 in the SAC.

Senior center Stacie Rhodes (Knightdale, N.C.) had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wingate attack. Junior forward Stefani Shuey (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore guard Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) added 13 points each, while freshman guard Britney Mitchell (Indian Trail, N.C.) contributed a career-high 12 points. Sophomore guard Stephanie Whitenack (West Chester, Ohio) handed out a game-high eight assists for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore guard Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) led the Tornados with 11 points. Sophomore guard Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) added 10 points. Junior forward Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) had four points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Brevard. Wingate held Brevard senior forward Samantha Winn (Candler, N.C.) to six points, 14-plus points below her team-leading scoring average.

The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run (capped by a three from Washington) to take a 20-11 lead at the midway point in the first half. A jumper from Rhodes pushed the lead to 10 with 8:45 remaining in the half. The Tornados trimmed the lead to five on a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) one minute later.

Wingate answered with a 9-2 run to take a 35-23 lead at the 1:43 mark. Rhodes started the spurt with a jumper, while Mitchell capped it with a fast-break bucket. The Bulldogs took a 37-27 lead heading to halftime.

The hosts used a 29-7 run in the opening six minutes of the second half to blow the game open. Five different Bulldogs scored in the decisive run, which was capped by a jumper from Shuey at the 13:51 mark. A jumper from Schlobohm, along with a free throw from senior guard Millie Wharton (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) cut the lead to 16 at the 9:41 mark.

Brevard would get no closer the rest of the way. The Bulldogs knocked down 11 free throws in the final nine minutes to secure the victory. The two teams combined to shoot 88 free throws in the game, with Brevard hitting 32-of-47 and Wingate canning 29-of-41.

The Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent from the field and converted 19 Brevard turnovers into 18 points. The Bulldogs outscored the Tornados 34-14 in the paint and 17-2 in fast break points. Wingate also held a decisive 57-42 rebounding advantage on the afternoon.

Wingate returns to action Monday night, traveling to NCAA Division I Charleston Southern University for a 7 p.m. start. The Bulldogs return home Saturday, Jan. 23, hosting league foe Tusculum College at 2 p.m. The Tornados host number 10 Carson-Newman College Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
