Winter Park, Fla.----The Rollins University men’s lacrosse team built an early lead and never relinquished the advantage, taking an 11-8 Deep South Conference victory over visiting Wingate University Monday night at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field on the RC campus.
Rollins is 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the DSC. Wingate is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the DSC. The Bulldogs continue their tour of the Sunshine State Wednesday, visiting Florida Southern University for a 7 p.m. DSC encounter.
Senior attack Charlie Shelly (Pompano Beach, Fla.) led the host Tars with two goals and three assists. Shelly’s second goal gave Rollins an 11-4 lead with 8:56 to play in the fourth quarter. The seven-point advantage was the Tars’ largest lead of the night. Three RC teammates supported Shelly by contributing two goals each.
For Wingate, redshirt sophomore midfielder Travis Barrett (Andover, N.J.) and redshirt senior attack Angus Derbyshire (Thurmont, Md.) had two goals each. Bulldog junior attack Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.) had one goal and two assists.
The Tars led 5-2 after the first 15 minutes of play. Rollins turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 advantage by scoring the four goals of the opening frame. Sophomore midfielder Hudson Atkins, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) scored both of his goals in the first quarter. His second tally made the score 3-2 Rollins at the 4:25 mark. The Bulldogs would not regain the advantage.
Rollins junior goalkeeper Zach Cole (Rumford, R.I.) allowed six goals and recorded 10 saves in 55-plus minutes of action. Cole also recorded his first career assist for the Tars. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) went the distance. He gave up 11 goals and notched six saves. Dlugozima also dished out an assist Monday night.
Wingate outshot Rollins 39-27; the Bulldogs held a slim 19-17 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate won 12-of-23 face-offs. Barrett won seven-of-12, while Derbyshire won five-of-10.
The Bulldogs collected 40 ground balls, while the Tars picked up 36. The two teams split 55 turnovers almost 50-50, as Wingate made 28 and Rollins had 27. The Bulldogs managed only one extra-man goal in 12 EMO opportunities. The Tars converted one of four EMO possessions.
