#14 Wingate splits doubleheader at Lander

Greenwood, S.C.----The 14th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs split a doubleheader with the Bearcats of Lander University in NCAA Division II softball action Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the first game 8-0 in five innings, while Lander won game two 5-3. The Bulldogs move to 19-3 overall, while Lander is now 10-14 on the year.

Game One: Wingate 8, Lander 0 (five innings)       BOX SCORE 

Sophomore catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) went two-for-four with a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior shortstop Debra Grijalva (San Jose, Calif.) added a two-for-four day with an RBI and run scored while senior outfielder LaRonda McClain (Kings Mountain, N.C.) scored two runs for the Bulldogs.

Wingate struck early, scoring two runs in the first on a two-run homer from Barrineau.

The Bulldogs scored their other six runs of game one in the third inning. Freshman first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) blasted a three-run homer to make it 5-0. Barrineau added a two-run single to push the lead to seven. Grijalva followed with an RBI single to make it 8-0.

Junior right-hander Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.) got the win, improving to 10-1 on the year. She allowed three hits in five innings of work while striking out three. Freshman Amanda Hamby (Belton, S.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season. She allowed eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits in five innings of work.

Game Two: Lander 5, Wingate 3       BOX SCORE

Grijalva homered for the Bulldogs in game two, while sophomore outfielder Jessica Bowen (Matthews, N.C.) was two-for-three with two RBI.

Wingate took the lead by plating two runs in the fourth. Grijalva got it started with a solo homer. Bowen would deliver a two-out RBI single to make it 2-0.

Lander answered by scoring three runs in the fourth. Senior outfielder Natalie Smith (Hollywood, Fla.) got it started with an RBI double. The Bearcats tied the game by scoring on a Wingate error, then took the lead on an RBI single from Casey Corbitt (West Columbia, S.C.).

The Bulldogs tied the game at three on another two-out RBI single from Bowen in the top of the sixth.

The Bearcats again had the answer, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Ashley Proctor (Saluda, S.C.) provided the big blow, a two-out, two-run single to right field to make it 5-3.

Sophomore Hayley Leissner (Jefferson, Ga.) got the win, improving to 5-3 on the year. She allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking five. Blankenship took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work on three hits, falling to 10-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 3 p.m. start. Lander also returns to action Tuesday, hosting Georgia College at 2 p.m.
