Pensacola, Fla.----University of West Florida junior Eric Kroll (Pace, Fla.) delivered a two out, two-run single in the bottom of the tenth to propel the number 29 Argos to a 8-7 extra innings win over the Wingate University Bulldogs at Jim Spooner Field Sunday. Wingate broke the 6-6 tie in the top of the tenth but couldn’t hold on, allowing the Argos to take the rubber match of the three-game series.
Wingate leaves the Sunshine State with a 28-17 overall record, while falling to 1-5 in extra inning contests in 2010. UWF jumps to 32-15 overall; the Argos have won eight weekend series in a row.
The loss spoiled a huge day for Wingate redshirt freshman first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.). Yeung, who went three-for-six with a homer and two RBI on Saturday, added a four-for-five effort in the series finale. His monster Sunday included a three-run homer and a RBI single. Junior designated hitter Tres Ramirez (Ocala, Fla.) contributed a three-for-three effort, while senior second basemen Logan Isaacs (Raleigh, N.C.) also had three hits, a homer and two RBI. Seven different Bulldogs scored runs in the defeat.
The Argos scored a solo run in the bottom of the first for the third straight day on a RBI single from junior third basemen Dustin Lawley (Bessemer, Ala.). Yeung delivered his first RBI of the day in the fourth to score sophomore outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) and tie the game at one. Wingate took the lead one inning later in the fifth, thanks to an Isaacs single up the middle to score sophomore shortstop Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.).
The lead would not last, as the Argos added three runs on two hits to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Designated hitter Zach Taylor (Vandiver, Ala.) delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-RBI single off Wingate senior reliever Dusty White (Charlotte, N.C.).
West Florida added a single run in the sixth to push the lead to three heading to the eighth. After consecutive singles with one out, Yeung homered for the fourth time this season to tie the game at five. With the blast, Yeung moved to third on the team with 37 RBI on the season. The Argos had an answer yet again to take a 6-5 lead. After a triple to start the eighth inning, junior Brandon Brewer (Apopka, Fla.) singled through the infield to score the go-ahead run.
For the second time this week, Isaacs tied a game in the ninth with a solo homer on 2-1 count. He homered on an identical count Tuesday against SAC foe Catawba College. The game-tying hit against West Florida gave him the team lead with nine home runs. Junior pitcher Cameron Falcon (Durham, N.C.) worked around an error by inducing a double play to end an uprising in the bottom of the ninth.
In the 10th frame, Wingate had the bases loaded with only one out against Argo reliever Zach North (Miami, Fla.), but could only manage one unearned run on an Allison sacrifice fly. With a 7-6 lead, Falcon retired the first West Florida batter in the bottom of the 10th inning on a fly out. After a single and a fielder’s choice groundout, second basemen Kyle Brown (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) nailed a double down the left field line to set up the second and third, two-out situation for Kroll. On a 1-1 delivery from Falcon, Kroll pulled a single through the right side to score the game tying and winning runs.
North picked up the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 innings to improve to 2-1 overall. He picked up the last out in the ninth and gave up one unearned run in the 10th. For Wingate, Falcon pitched two innings and tasted defeat for the first time in 2010, falling to 3-1 overall. Junior lefty Chris Nelson (Greenville, N.C.) started the game for Wingate, pitching 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs.
Wingate will play one more time before the upcoming Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, as they host Peach Belt Conference member Lander University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Wingate took an 8-5 decision earlier this year against the Bearcats in Greenwood, S.C. West Florida will also play a PBC member, hosting Columbus State University Wednesday.
