Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs pounded out 16 hits, including eight extra-base hits en route to a 10-2 victory over the Jaguars of Augusta State University in NCAA Division II baseball action Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The ‘Dogs finish off the weekend sweep of the Jaguars and improve to 8-1 on the season, while ASU falls to 2-6 overall.
Junior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) went four-for-four with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder
Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was three-for-three with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while junior shortstop
Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) was three-for-five with a homer, RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore infielder
Jake Sutton (North Point, Fla.) was three-for-three to lead the Augusta State offense. Sophomore outfielder
Matt Smith (Aiken, S.C.) and freshman catcher Ryan Khan (Marietta, Ga.) each had a hit and an RBI for the Jaguars.
Wingate struck first, plating a pair of runs in the second inning. Allison got it started; leading off the frame with a solo homer to left center field, his first of the year. Karr followed with a double, then scored on an RBI double from senior catcher
Taylor Honeycutt (Indian Trail, N.C.) to make it 2-0.
Vazquez led off the third inning with his first homer of the season, a solo shot to left to put the Bulldogs on top by three. Another RBI double from Karr plated Allison to make it 4-0.
The Jaguars cut the deficit to three in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Khan. The ‘Dogs responded with three runs in the fifth inning. Allison got it started with a sacrifice fly, while the second run scored on a wild pitch. Honeycutt drove home the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead.
Augusta State got an RBI groundout from Smith in the sixth to make it 7-2. Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) drove home the first run with an RBI triple to left center, then scored on an RBI single from Karr.
The Bulldogs got one more run in the eighth on an RBI single from redshirt sophomore infielder
James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) to make it 10-2.
Senior right-hander
Marc Rape (Lancaster, S.C.) got the win, improving to 1-0 on the season. He allowed an unearned run in five innings of work, striking out four and allowing only three hits. Freshman left-hander
Kip Custer (Augusta, Ga.) took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Wingate returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a non-conference regional matchup at 4 p.m. The ‘Dogs return home Wednesday to host Limestone at 3 p.m. Wingate will open conference play Friday night, hosting game one of a three-game series against Mars Hill at 6 p.m. Augusta State will host Paine Wednesday at 2 p.m.
