Errors plague Bulldogs in 10-4 loss to Millersville

The Marauders of Millersville University plated five runs in the second, en route to a 10-4 win over the Wingate University Bulldogs in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday evening at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Millersville improves to 8-2 overall, while the ‘Dogs fall to 15-10 on the season. The teams will play again Wednesday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled to start at 3 p.m., but has been moved to a 2 p.m. start time.

Sophomore catcher Ryan Chesler (Pottstown, Pa.) went three-for-five with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Millersville attack. Junior outfielder Chris Edgar (Hatfield, Pa.) added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while junior infielder Mike August (Brandywine, Md.) drove in a pair of runs for the Marauders.

Junior designated hitter Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) was two-for-five with a double, RBI and run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) added a double and two runs scored, while junior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

The Marauders took a five-run lead in the second, taking advantage of four Wingate errors in the inning. The first two hitters of the inning reached on errors, while sophomore infielder Nick Bonadies (Scotch Plains, N.J.) plated the first run with an RBI single. Chesler followed with a two run single, while a third run scored on a pair of Wingate errors on the play. Chesler scored on an RBI groundout to make it 5-0.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman infielder Cody Shelton (Charlotte, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk to drive home the first run, while senior catcher Taylor Honeycutt (Indian Trail, N.C.) plated the next run with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Wingate added a run in the fourth to cut the Millersville lead to two. Allison led off the inning with a double, then scored on a sacrifice fly from redshirt sophomore infielder James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) to make it 5-3.

Millersville got the run back in the fifth via a sacrifice fly from August to make it 6-3. An RBI single from August in the seventh pushed the lead to four, while another RBI single from Edgar made it 8-3 in the eighth. The Marauders added two more runs in the ninth, getting RBI singles from Chesler and freshman infielder Zach Stone (Coatesville, Pa.) to make it 10-3.

The ‘Dogs plated their final run of the day in the ninth, getting an RBI double from Karr to make it 10-4.

Freshman right-hander Tad Barton (Reading, Pa.) got the win in relief for Millersville, improving to 1-0 on the year. He went three innings without allowing a run, striking out three and giving up four hits. Freshman right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-4 on the year. He allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings of work, striking out two.
