‘Dogs take 7-3 win over Millersville Wednesday afternoon

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs defeated Millersville University 7-3 in NCAA Division II baseball action on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The teams split a two-game series, as Wingate improves to 16-10 overall, while Millersville falls to 8-3 on the year.

Junior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) had a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to spark the Wingate offense. Redshirt sophomore catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with a double, RBI and a run scored. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had a double, RBI and run scored, while junior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) was two-for-three for the Bulldogs.

Millersville got on the board first, scoring twice in the third inning. Zach Stone started the inning with a double, then scored on an RBI groundout to put the Marauders on top. Chris Edgar followed with a single, then scored on a Wingate error to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the inning, with Hunter leading things off with a double, then scoring on an RBI single from senior outfielder Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.). Yeung started the fourth inning with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Hunter to tie the game at two.

The ‘Dogs scored three times in the fifth to take the lead. Yeung drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly. Allison followed by blasting his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to left to make it 5-2.

Derek Kline led off the sixth inning with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to left center to cut the Wingate lead to two.

The Bulldogs regained a three-run lead in the sixth when freshman infielder Matthew Barrier (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, went to third on a double from redshirt sophomore infielder James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.), then scored on an RBI groundout from Rogers to make it 6-3.

Allison scored the game’s final run in the seventh via an RBI single from Barrier to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 advantage.

Freshman right-hander Greyson Davis (New Bern, N.C.) got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed two earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out four without walking a batter. Kyle Belanchik took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, opening a three-game conference series against Lenoir-Rhyne Friday night at 6 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The teams meet again Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
