Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got two more solid performances from freshman right-hander
Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the visiting Wolves of Newberry College. Paul did not allow an earned run on the day, as Wingate won 5-0 in game one and 6-2 in the second game, improving to 21-15 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 14-15 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 5, Newberry 0

Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was two-for-three with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman catcher
Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while junior first baseman
Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) was one-for-one with an RBI.
Wingate got on the board in the first, when Burrell started the frame with a double, went to third on a passed ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder
Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.).
The Bulldogs added three runs in the third. Burrell got it started with an RBI double to left. Braswell followed with an RBI double to left center to give Wingate a 3-0 lead. Loudermilt added a sacrifice fly to give the ‘Dogs a four-run advantage.
Burrell walked to start the fifth, went to second on Maffucci’s sacrifice, then scored on Braswell’s second double of the day to make it 5-0.
That would be plenty for Paul, who moved to 16-14 on the year. She was dominant in game one, getting the Wolves in order in four of the seven innings, while never allowing a Newberry player to get to second base. Paul retired the last 11 hitters of game one. Freshman right-hander
Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, falling to 1-3 on the year.
Game Two: Wingate 6, Newberry 2
Maffucci was two-for-three with a homer and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Braswell also homered in game two, while Loudermilt was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore outfielder
Jordyn Setzer (Taylorsville, N.C.) was three-for-four with a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Shelby Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) was two-for-three with two RBI to lead the Newberry attack in game two. Junior infielder
Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) scored a pair of run for the Wolves.
Newberry took the lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Holland.
Wingate responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Burrell led off the frame with a double, then scored on a Newberry error. Loudermilt added an RBI single to give the ‘Dogs a 2-1 lead.
Holland’s RBI single in the top of the third tied the game at two. The Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Braswell blasted her fourth homer of the year to put Wingate on top 3-2. The ‘Dogs would then load the bases and get a clutch two-out, two-run single from freshman infielder
Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) to make it 5-2.
Maffucci connected on her first homer as a Bulldog in the sixth to make the final margin 6-2.
Paul notched her second win of the day and 17th of the season by going the distance once again, allowing two unearned runs on five hits, while striking out two. Paul did not walk a batter in her 14 innings of work. Sophomore right-hander
Hailey Harris (Rougemont, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-1. She allowed five runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Anderson at 2 p.m. Newberry returns to action Monday, traveling to USC Beaufort at 2 p.m.
