Trojans take two from Wingate Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Anderson University Trojans followed up a 3-0 victory over Wingate University with a 13-8 victory over the Bulldogs, blasting five homers in the second contest to complete the sweep in South Atlantic Conference softball action Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans improve to 28-6 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 21-17 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
 
Game One: Anderson 3, Wingate 0
 
Freshman infielder Jessica Neidigh (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was two-for-four with an RBI to lead the Anderson offense. Freshman outfielder Rachel Rhodes (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was two-for-four with two runs scored, while sophomore catcher Laura Jansky (Kennesaw, Ga.) added a two-for-three effort, which included a double.
 
Sophomore infielder Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) went three-for-three to lead the Wingate attack in game one.
 
The Trojans got on the board in the second, scoring two runs. The first run scored via a Wingate error, while Neidigh added an RBI single to make it 2-0.
 
Rhodes started the sixth with a double, then scored on another Bulldog error, making the final margin 3-0.
 
Senior right-hander Amber Duncan (Matthews, N.C.) got the win, improving to 14-3 on the year. She allowed just four hits, while striking out three in the complete game shutout. Freshman right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, falling to 17-15. She allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work, striking out five.
 
Game Two: Anderson 13, Wingate 8
 
Sophomore shortstop Abby Child (LaGrange, Ga.) was three-for-five with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Anderson attack in game two. Jansky added a homer and three RBI, while sophomore first baseman Danielle Swygert (Sharpsburg, Ga.) and Duncan each homered and drove in two for the Trojans. Neidigh was four-for-five in game two, scoring twice.
 
Freshman shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was three-for-five with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman catcher Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was two-for-four with a homer and three RBI.
 
Anderson scored four times in the first inning, getting a pair of two run shots. Freshman outfielder Rebecca Martin (Anderson, S.C.) plated the first two runs with a two-run shot to left. Duncan added a two-run blast to push the advantage to four.
 
Child’s RBI double in the second made it 5-0, while a two-run shot from Swygert put the Trojans on top 7-0.
 
Wingate answered in the bottom of the frame, getting a three-run homer from Burrell to make it 7-3. Jansky’s three-run homer in the fourth pushed the advantage back to seven.
 
Braswell connected on a two-run homer in the fourth to get Wingate to within five. Whitley added an RBI single to make it 10-6. Burrell added an RBI double in the fifth to make it a three-run game, while a sacrifice fly from Braswell made it a two-run game.
 
The Trojans added some insurance in the seventh, getting a three-run homer from Child to make the final margin 13-8.
 
Neidigh got the win in relief, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work, striking out three to improve to 2-1 on the year. Junior right-hander Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a 1 p.m. start.
