Wolves take two from Bulldogs Friday

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves swept a doubleheader over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference softball action Friday afternoon. The Wolves won the first game 4-1, while taking game two 4-2. Newberry improves to 15-13 overall and 3-5 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 17-16-1 overall and 1-7 in the conference. 

Game One: Newberry 4, Wingate 1

Casey Nellums was two-for-three with a double, RBI and run scored to lead the Newberry offense. Gabby Bedard went three-for-four with a pair of runs scored, while Paige Brugh went two-for-three with an RBI for the Wolves. Leah Hosking added an RBI for Newberry. 

Senior outfielder Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) was one-for-three with a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior infielder Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) had an RBI, while sophomore Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was one-for-one in a pinch hitting role. 

Newberry got on the board with two runs in the third. Nellums got it started with an RBI double, while an RBI single from Brugh made it 2-0. 

A Wingate error plated the third Newberry run of the day in the fifth, while Hosking’s RBI single made it 4-0. 

The Bulldogs got on the board in the seventh. Singles from Maffucci and Braswell, along with a Newberry error loaded the bases with no outs. Whitley’s sacrifice fly made it 4-1. That would be all of the scoring Wingate would do, with a flyout and groundout ending the game. 

Kaylyn Camacho got the win, improving to 7-7. She did not allow a hit in five innings of work, walking seven. Freshman right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 11-8. She allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work, striking out five. 

Game Two: Newberry 4, Wingate 2

Bedard was three-for-three with a run scored to lead the attack for the Wolves in game two. Nellums had an RBI and a run scored, while Casey Stevens was two-for-three with an RBI. Brittany Phillips also drove in a run for Newberry. 

Sophomore shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Whitley added an RBI, while Maffucci and freshman outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) each went one-for-three with a run scored. 

Wingate jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Maffucci and Adams started the game with singles. Whitley plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, while an RBI single from Burrell made it 2-0. 

Newberry had the answer, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. Nellums drove in the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI single from Stevens tied the game. An RBI groundout from Phillips gave the Wolves a 3-2 lead. 

Newberry added a run in the fifth on a squeeze bunt from Katie Capobianco to make it 4-2. 

Shelley Jeffcoat got the win, improving to 8-4. She allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out two. Sophomore right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, falling to 6-8. She allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings of work, striking out two. 

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Anderson for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
