Wingate, N.C.----Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, Wingate University sophomore infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) connected on a game-winning walk-off three-run homer to give the 27th-ranked Bulldogs a dramatic 9-7 victory over visiting Mars Hill College in a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium. The Lions won game won 6-2 to snap Wingate’s 12-game SAC winning streak. The Bulldogs are 28-15 overall and 19-5 in the SAC, holding a one-game lead on first place in the standings with three games remaining. Mars Hill moves to 10-26 overall and 7-15 in the conference.
Game One: Mars Hill 6, Wingate 2
Mars Hill left-hander Caleb Edwards tossed a complete game to lead the Lions to a 6-2 victory.
Shawn Weber was three-for-four with an RBI, while
Tyler Shuler added a pair of RBI for Mars Hill.
Dalton Eisenbath was two-for-five with an RBI and a run scored, while
Tommy Scala was one-for-four with two run scored.
Sophomore catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double and an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Redshirt senior infielder
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had a double and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four. Redshirt sophomore first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) added an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. A pair of singles started the frame, while a two-run double from Shuler got the Lions on the board. Wingate cut the lead in half in the fourth. Yeung ripped a two-out double down the left field line, then scored on an RBI double to right center from Clark to make it 2-1.
Mars Hill had the answer, scoring three runs in the fifth. Eisenbath plated the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI single from
Marc Marsh made it 4-1. Weber added a two-out RBI double down the left field line to give the Lions a four-run lead.
Scala drew a walk to lead off the sixth, then scored on an RBI double from
Phillip Carroll to make it 6-1. Wingate scored a run in the seventh when Prince scored on a sacrifice fly from Cherry, making the final margin 6-2.
Edwards moved to 3-5 on the year with the win. He allowed two runs on nine hits in his nine innings of work, striking out seven without walking a batter, registering 110 pitches on the afternoon. Freshman left-hander
TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 5-1. He allowed two earned runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Game Two: Wingate 9, Mars Hill 7
Prince had three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Spitz added a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs, while junior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) was two-for-three with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore shortstop
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was one-for-three with two runs scored.
Jacob Rand was two-for-three with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Mars Hill attack. Carroll added a double and two RBI, while Weber was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.
Thomas Timmerman had two hits, an RBI and run scored, while Shuler added two more hits and two runs scored for the Lions.
An RBI double from Carroll in the top of the first gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Serra led off the bottom of the frame with a single, then went to third on an error and scored when Spitz was caught stealing.
Mars Hill took a 2-1 lead on Scala’s RBI single in the third. The Bulldogs answered with two in the bottom of the frame to take their first lead of the day. Godinez started the inning with a single, then scored on Serra’s RBI double down the left field line. An RBI groundout from Spitz would plate Serra, giving the ‘Dogs a 3-2 lead.
The Lions regained the lead with two in the fourth. Rand got things started with an RBI double, while an RBI single from Weber gave Mars Hill 4-3 advantage.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in their half to retake the lead. A hit batsman and single put runners on first and second with one out. A throwing error on a double play attempt plated the first run of the inning to tie the game at four, while an RBI single from freshman outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) gave Wingate a 5-4 lead.
Mars Hill answered with three runs in the next half inning to take a 7-5 advantage. A walk and single started the inning, while an RBI groundout from Carroll tied the game at five. Timmerman followed with an RBI infield single to put the Lions back on top. Rand’s RBI single gave Mars Hill a two-run lead with two innings remaining.
Wingate would trail by two in the bottom of the seventh. After a strikeout to start the inning, Spitz got Wingate to within a run when he connected on his third homer of the year, a solo shot down the left field line to make it 7-6. Yeung followed with a single to center, while a walk to Clark put runners on first and second with one out. Prince connected on a 1-1 pitch from Mars Hill reliever

Junior right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) got the win, improving to 4-2. He worked three innings in relief without allowing an earned run, striking out one without walking a batter.
Patrick Riehl took the loss, falling to 2-3. He allowed three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Wingate returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Francis Marion for a 6 p.m. start. The Bulldogs travel to Tusculum next weekend for a three-game SAC series to finish up the conference season. Mars Hill hosts King Wednesday at 3 p.m.
