Wingate, N.C.----The Catawba College Indians connected on four homers Friday night en route to a 10-4 victory over Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Indians win their 10th straight, improving to 19-11 overall and 13-5 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 21-9 overall and 15-6 in the conference.
Blake Houston had two homers including a grand slam, driving in five to lead the Catawba attack.
Julio Zubillaga added a homer and two RBI, while
Ethan Satterfield had a homer and two runs scored.
Senior outfielder
Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) had two homers and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) went one-for-four with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Catawba jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, taking advantage of two Wingate errors. Houston scored the first run on a throwing error, while a sacrifice fly from Zubillaga made it 2-0.
Malachi Hanes added an RBI double to give the Indians a 3-0 advantage.
Houston connected on his first homer of the year in the second, a solo shot to push the lead to four. It was the first homer allowed this season by Wingate starter
Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.). Little had gone 105 innings without allowing a homer, dating back to his first start of the 2013 season.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the second when Somers connected on his first career homer, a solo shot to right to make it 4-1.
Catawba had the emphatic response, scoring five times in the third to make it 9-1. Zubillaga started it with a solo homer to right. Houston added the big blow, connecting on a grand slam to right to put the Indians on top by eight.
A solo homer from Satterfield in the fourth made it 10-1.
Wingate answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame when Somers connected on a three-run shot to left center, making the final margin 10-4.
Craig Brooks got the win, moving to 7-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking three. Little suffered his first loss of the season and just his second in two years, falling to 7-1. He allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in three innings of work, striking out three. Sophomore right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings for Wingate, striking out five while allowing just one hit.
