Box Score Davidson, N.C.----The NCAA Division I Davidson Wildcats defeated visiting Wingate University 6-1 Saturday morning in NCAA women's tennis action. Davidson improves to 3-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-3. All three Wingate losses have come against Division I opposition.
The doubles matches were tightly contested, with Wingate's number one team of freshmen Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) prevailing 6-4 at number one doubles. Sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) dropped a tough 7-6 decision at number two doubles, falling 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
In singles play, Garcia picked up a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory at number six singles. Sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) lost a third set tiebreaker 10-4 after taking the second set 6-3 at number four singles, falling 7-5 in the opening set.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 12 p.m. Wingate was originally slated to host Johnson C. Smith Sunday, but that match has been moved to next Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in Wingate.
