Hartsville, S.C.----For the second consecutive season and the fourth time in the last five years, the Wingate University Bulldogs have gone undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference regular season. The 49th-ranked Bulldogs won 7-2 at Coker, notching their 37th straight SAC victory and winning the outright regular season championship. Wingate improves to 13-4 overall and 11-0 in the SAC, winning its fifth consecutive regular season conference title. The 'Dogs have won 48 of their last 49 conference matches.
Wingate swept through doubles play on Tuesday at Coker. Sophomore
Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) and senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) won 8-2 at number one doubles, while freshmen
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) won 8-6 at number two doubles. Junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) added an 8-5 victory at number three doubles to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
Womeodu prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at number three singles, while Tanik won 6-2, 6-2 at number four singles. Thomas won 6-2, 6-0 at number five singles, while Garcia cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number six singles.
The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday, hosting Francis Marion at 2 p.m.
