Columbus, Ga.----The Wingate University men's golf team finished tied for 10th place in the Cougar Invitational, hosted by Columbus State University Monday and Tuesday. The South Atlantic Conference member Bulldogs shot a 297 Tuesday to complete three rounds at 876. Wingate tied the University of West Georgia and Georgia Southwestern University. The two-day, three-round event was contested at the Country Club of Columbus, a 6,515-yard, par 71 golf course.

Three WU student-athletes shot a 73 Tuesday: freshman Tim Bombosch (Oberhausen, Germany), sophomore Philip Coles (Rossdorf, Germany) and freshman Charles Joubert (Meduon, France). Freshman Darius Gros (Marcq En Baroeul, France) carded a 78 Tuesday, while sophomore Christian Pickerel (Hull, Ga.) posted a 79.

On the final individual leader board, Bombosch tied for eighth place at one-under-par 212. He shot 69 and 70 in Monday's two sessions. Joubert was one stroke back of his classmate at even-par 213. He posted rounds of 72 and 68 Monday. Lander University's Michal Pospisil won a play-off to take the individual title. Both Pospisil and Point (Ga.) University's Francisco Oliveira posted three-round totals of 209.

"I was very happy with the first tournament of the season with the scoring from some of our guys," Wingate head men's golf coach Corey Iacofano says. "Between Tim and Charles, (they) both faced adversity at some point throughout the tournament and handled it very well by following up adversity with a few birdies."

"Team-wise, we aren't necessarily happy with a 10th place finish, but are happy to be bunched with teams from our region in terms of our finish in this tournament," Iacofano says. "We always love coming to Columbus State University for their event…they are first-class hosts. We are grateful for the chance to compete in such a great event."

The University of North Alabama rallied to take the team title with a 54-hole score of 845. Second-round leader Lander finished four strokes back at 849. The remainder of the top five teams include Lee (Tenn.) University (855), Florida Tech (857) and Valdosta State University (863).

Wingate returns to the links Monday, Oct. 3, participating in the NCAA Division II National Preview, hosted by Saint Leo (Fla.) University. The Sunshine State Conference members are hosting the event at the Reunion Resort Tom Watson Course in Kissimmee, Fla.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

Wingate freshman Tim Bombosch (Oberhausen, Germany):

"Overall, (I thought I) played very solid. (I) made some mistakes and left a couple shots on the greens. All in all, it was a good start for me and a good first week with the team. We definitely have more potential than we showed this week, so we are looking forward to the next few tournaments."

Wingate freshman Charles Joubert (Meduon, France):

"Since the last qualifying round, I was so excited to play my first college tournament and represent Wingate! Actually, I'm really confident with my game. I like this type of course…and it was in good shape. It was a very good week for me, with some highs and lows, but a lot of positive things to keep for the next tournament."
