Sam Brodersen named Varsity Gems SAC Pitcher of the Week

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University junior right-hander Sam Brodersen has been named the Varsity Gems South Atlantic Conference baseball Pitcher of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday morning. Brodersen earns Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The 'Dogs have now had the SAC Pitcher of the Week each of the first two weeks of the season, with Mitch Farris earning the honors last week.

Brodersen was dominant in his start Thursday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 9-1 victory over Charleston in the first of a three-game series that Wingate would go on to sweep. Brodersen got things started for a WU pitching staff that struck out 21 batters on the night and 48 over the three-game series.

Brodersen went 5 1/3 innings against the Golden Eagles, allowing one run on just two hits while striking out a career-high 12. He threw 83 pitches on the night, walking just two. Brodersen struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced on the night, including a stretch of seven in a row. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, until allowing a walk to start the top of the fifth inning.

Brodersen was an All-SAC, All-Region and honorable mention All-American reliever last season, making 25 appearances on the mound with a 4-0 record, eight saves and a 2.83 ERA. He struck out 77 in 47 innings of work on the season, holding opponents to a .183 batting average.

Wingate has a busy week, traveling to Belmont Abbey Tuesday for a 4 p.m. start. The Bulldogs host a four-game series against Nova Southeastern this weekend, with singles games Thursday and Friday at 4 p.m. and a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
