#2 Tampa men earn hard-fought 99-71 victory over #7 Wingate

Tampa, Fla.----The defending national champion and current No. 2 the University of Tampa earned a hard-fought 99-71 NCAA Division II men's swimming victory over No. 7 Wingate University Saturday at the Benson Riseman Aquatic Center on the UT campus. The No. 4 UT Spartans defeated the No. 7 WU Bulldogs 110.5-59.5 in the women's meet.

"We had a great meet and tough racing today against Tampa. I thought we really stepped up to take it to them. We had lots of close swims. Seeing our men's team go toe to toe against the defending champions and race without any hesitation was the best part. Our teams have shown a lot of growth this year and I am very proud of this."
 
Wingate men's highlights
 
- Wingate started the meet with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay (1:30.12)
- Ney Chagas Filho and Andres Martijena swam the first two legs
- Mike Topchanalis and Manoel Silva sealed the deal
- The 'Dogs concluded the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay (3:00.83)
- Topchanalis collected his second gold medal, swimming the third leg
- Yassine Sebbata and Vladimir Krstulovic swam the first two legs
- Anton Witzell finished the race as WU edged UT by 0.34 seconds
- Topchanalis also finished second in the 100 Butterfly (48.99)
- The UT Spartans won five events by 0.90 seconds or less
- Sebbata had two close calls, as he finished second in two individual races
- He was second in the 200 Free (1:38.09) and the 100 Free (45.56)
- Tampa won the 200 Free by 0.68 seconds and the 100 Free by 0.40 seconds

- The Bulldogs won three individual races on Saturday
- Valentina Zapata Ceballos won the 100 Butterfly (57.03)
- Zapata Ceballos won the 100 Fly by 0.39 seconds over the UT runner-up
- Livia Kingsland touched first in the 500 Freestyle (5:02.51)
- Kingsland improved her seed, taking the gold by 0.14 seconds
- Natalia Dwojak won the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.93)
- Dwojak outswam the UT runner-up by 0.88 seconds
- Tampa won the meet-opening 200 Medley Relay by 0.60 seconds
- Nina Azirovic took second in the 200 Free (1:53.45)
- The Spartans won the 200 Free by a scant 0.09 seconds
- Overall, Tampa won four events by 0.60 seconds or less
