CONFERENCE CHAMPS! #14 Wingate downs Montevallo and Newberry to claim Conference Carolinas regular season title

In just the third year of the program's history, the 14th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs have captured a regular season Conference Carolinas regular season title. The Bulldogs celebrated Senior Night by prevailing over the University of Montevallo (257.720-252.830) and Newberry College (257.720-161.210) Friday night in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season at 9-0 overall and 8-0 in league play.

Wingate got off to a solid start in the Compulsory section, highlighted by a 9.75 in the Toss Heat and 9.65 in the Pyramid Heat, taking a slight 1.5-point lead over the Falcons and 19-point edge over the Wolves. The Acro section was highlighted by a 9.70 in the 5-Element Heat, along with a 9.55 in the 7-Element Heat, adding to the lead over both squads.

The Bulldogs were impressive in the Pyramid section, following up a 9.65 in the Inversion Heat, followed by back-to-back 9.80 scores in the Synchronized Heat and the Open Heat. The Toss section saw Wingate post a score of 9.60 in the 450 Salto, adding another half-point in the lead over Montevallo.

Wingate added over three points to the advantage in the Tumbling Section, posting a 9.675 in the 6-Element Pass and 9.325 in the Open Pass. The Bulldogs closed out the night with an 82.77 in the Team Event to finish off the five-point win over Montevallo and 96-point victory over Newberry.

Next up for Wingate is the Conference Carolinas Tournament, hosted by Emmanuel University in Franklin Springs, Ga. The top-seeded Bulldogs get a first-round bye, and will then take on the Coker vs. Mars Hill winner in the semifinals on Saturday, April 11 at noon. The winner of that contest is onto the title meet Sunday, April 12 at 11 a.m.
