Wingate University Athletics

The Wingate University women’s basketball team made its first-ever trip to Puerto Rico over the Thanksgiving holidays. The Bulldogs opened the trip with a 96-30 victory over the University of the Sacred Heart Tuesday night. On Friday night, Wingate topped American University of Puerto Rico 83-53. The Bulldogs are 4-1 overall.

 

On Tuesday, Wingate sophomore guard Kurie Washington led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Washington topped the Bulldog charts on Friday as well, taking game-high honors with her 20 points. She hit five-of-seven field goals and nine-of-10 free throws Friday. In addition, the 2009 SAC Freshman of the Year grabbed six rebounds.

 

Last year, Washington led first-year SAC players in scoring with 15.4 points per game. In SAC games, she averaged 18.8 points per game. In Wingate’s final 10 contests of the season, Washington posted 21.3 points per game.

 

In the SAC statistical rankings, Washington was second in free throw percentage (83.9), second in three-point field goal percentage (45.6) and fifth in scoring (15.4 points per game). Her 18.8 points per game average in league play topped the SAC charts. In addition to her 2009 Freshman of the Year distinction, Washington was named to the five-member SAC All-Freshman team.
