Charlotte, N.C.----Wingate University claimed wins over host Johnson C. Smith in both men’s and women’s non-conference tennis action on Friday at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. Both Bulldog teams picked up 9-0 victories.

The Wingate women did not lose a set Friday. Wingate junior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) defeated JCSU freshman Samantha Barnes (Hampton, Va.) 6-0, 6-1 at the number one singles flight. The Bulldogs lost only 13 games in the five contested singles matches.

Earlier in the day, Stasikelis teamed with freshman Kelli Ferguson (Charlotte, N.C.) to top Barnes and senior Jae Hargett (Minneapolis, Minn.) 8-1 at the number one doubles position. The Bulldogs are 2-2 overall, while Johnson C. Smith falls to 1-7 overall.

The Bulldog men finished the non-league match in the snow flurries. At the number three singles flight, Wingate junior Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) rallied from one set down to defeat Golden Bull sophomore McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Patchell and sophomore Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) earned an 8-1 number two doubles victory over Bean and sophomore Robert Butts (Atlanta, Ga.). Wingate dropped only six games in the three doubles matches. The Bulldogs are 2-1 overall, while the Golden Bulls are 2-7 overall.

The Wingate men and women begin South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne University at the WU Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m. The Johnson C. Smith men visit the Charlotte 49ers Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest. The JCSU women entertain CIAA divisional foe Chowan University Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
