#33 Saints defeat Bulldogs 7-2 in NCAA tennis action

Wingate, N.C.----The number 33 Limestone College men’s tennis team topped host Wingate University 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The Bulldog women picked up a 7-2 victory over the visiting Saints.

In the men’s match, Limestone (1-3 overall) swept the three doubles to take a 3-0 lead out of the gates. Three of the six singles matches went three sets. The visiting Saints picked up victories in two of three marathon matches to solidify their victory. Wingate is 4-2 overall.

Wingate sophomore Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) defeated Limestone senior Christian Warnholtz (Queretaro, Mexico) 7-6, 6-3 at the number two singles flight. Classmate Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned a hard-fought victory at the number four singles position, rallying to edge LC sophomore Henrik Nordquist (Stockholm, Sweden) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Wingate sophomore Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) and senior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) won two matches each for the victorious Bulldogs (4-3 overall). In the number two doubles match, the duo defeated LC sophomore Jimena Munoz Quiroga (La Candelaria, Coyoacan, Mexico) and senior Courtney Guerrieri (Union, S.C.) 8-2.

Alberghini defeated Guerrieri 6-1, 6-1 at the number four singles flight. Alschlager edged Limestone freshman Lauren Bolender (North Canton, Ohio) 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 (super tie-breaker) at the number three singles flight.

Munoz Quiroga won the battle of the top seeds, outlasting Wingate junior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 at the number one singles flight. Limestone also won the number two singles match, as junior Eve Aubry (Boucherville, Quebec, Canada) defeated Wingate freshman Kelli Ferguson (Charlotte, N.C.) 6-0, 6-3. The Saints are 0-3 overall.

The Wingate men and women return to South Atlantic Conference play Friday, hosting Lincoln Memorial University at the WU Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. The Limestone women host Conference Carolinas foe Converse College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., while the Saint men entertain Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday at 1 p.m.
