Ninety Six, S.C.----The No. 5 Wingate University men's golf team leads the Patriot Fall Classic after the first round Monday. The Bulldogs shot an 11-under-par 277 to take a seven-stroke lead over host Lander. The LU Bearcats are hosting this 54-hole event at the Patriot Golf Course at Grand Harbor.
 
The second round was suspended by darkness. The '25 NCAA semi-finalist Bulldogs had compiled a 17-under-par, second-round team score when play was halted. The 19 teams and 112 student-athletes will resume play at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning with the completion of round two. Round three will follow.
 
Wingate first-round highlights
 
- Senior All-American Lewis Beeden shares the lead at five-under-par 67
- Senior Alfie Storer is tied for third place at four-under-par 68
- Sophomore All-American Brandon Skidmore is tie for eighth at two-under-par 70
- Playing as an individual, freshman Mattia D'Errico also shot a first-round 70
- Sophomore Max Drott rounded out Wingate's counting scores with a 72
- Wingate had 24 first-round birdies, led by Storer with six and Beeden with five
 
Wingate unofficial second-round highlights
 
- Both Beeden and Storer are six-under-par with three holes each left to play
- Senior Fynn Loewe is four-under-par with two holes remaining to play
- Loewe had an eagle on the par-five, 578-yard hole No. 13
- Skidmore is one-under-par with three holes left in his second round
- D'Errico is five-under-par with three holes remaining to play
- He also has a second-round eagle to his credit (par-four, 355-yard No. 6)
