Bulldogs knock off #14 Lander in season opener

The Wingate University Bulldogs opened up the 2026 season in style, positing the biggest victory in program history by taking down #14 Lander 252.365-251.925 in Acro & Tumbling action Thursday night. The Bulldogs open their third season at 1-0, while the preseason conference favorite Bearcats fall to 0-1.

Wingate opened things up by posting a 9.80 out of 10 in the Pyramid heat in the compulsory events, adding a 9.20 in the Toss heat. The 'Dogs posted a 9.05 in heat one of the Acro portion, while going for 9.70 in heat three. The Bulldogs scored a 9.40 or better in all three heats of the Pyramid event, highlighted by a 9.85 in heat three.

The Toss section saw the Bulldogs post a 9.05 in heat one and 9.20 in heat three. In the six-event Tumbling portion, Wingate piled up the points in the final three heats. The 'Dogs went for 9.05 in the Aerial Pass, 9.275 in the 6-Element Pass and 9.125 in the Open Pass.

The Bulldogs entered the team portion with 168.525 points, trailing Lander, who entered the team event at 171.625. Wingate posted a score of 83.84 in the team event, with a start value of 98.89. The Bearcats posted an 80.30 score, giving the 'Dogs the narrow victory.

Wingate is back in action Feb. 22, traveling to Coker for a three-team meet, with Converse also participating. The first home meet for the Bulldogs is set for March 13 at 6 p.m.
