Wingate University freshman jumper Bryce Bennett (Homer, Ga.) earned AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon. Bennett earned the honor for the first time, as indoor track and field is the newest sport on the SAC radar this year.
 
Bennett won the men's long jump in the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday at the JDL Fast Track. Bennett collected his second gold medal of the 2017-18 indoor season with his victorious leap of 7.16 meters. Bennett's mark is the third-best in the Southeast Region this season and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
 
"Bryce has been the surprise of the year for us," Wingate head track and field coach Travis LeFlore says. "He's picked up quick in what he needed to work on coming out of high school. As a result, he has two first-place finishes as well as an NCAA National Championship qualifying distances in his first two meets. I expect Bryce to continue to develop this season and battle for one of the spots to make the NCAA Indoor National Championships."
