Wingate, N.C.----The Lincoln Memorial University men's tennis team defeated Wingate University 6-3 in South Atlantic Conference action Friday afternoon. The Wingate women defeated the Railsplitters 6-3. The LMU men move to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Wingate women improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while LMU falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. 

The Wingate men won three of the six singles matches Friday afternoon. Sophomore Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) won 6-1, 6-0 in number two singles. Sophomore Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) remained undefeated in singles play this season with a 6-0, 6-0 win in number four singles. Sophomore Greg Machado  (Sao Paulo, Brazil) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win in number five singles. 

For the women, sophomore Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) and senior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) went 2-0 on the afternoon. Alschlager defeated Mandy Mills 6-1, 6-4 in number three singles action while Alberghini topped Melanie Smith 6-4, 6-1 in number four singles action. The two combined for an 8-2 win over Morgan Taylor and Amanda Horenkamp of LMU in number two doubles.

Freshman Helen Goreshi  (Oakville, Ontario) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win in number five singles, while sophomore Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) won 6-2, 6-1 in number six singles. Junior Kara Stasikelis (Greenville, S.C.) and freshman Kelli Ferguson  (Concord, N.C.) teamed for an 8-5 win in number one doubles action.

The Wingate men and women both return to action Tuesday, March 2, traveling to Francis Marion for a 2 p.m. match. The Bulldogs return home Monday, March 15, hosting Anderson (S.C.) at 2:30 p.m. Both LMU teams travel to Catawba Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
