Wingate women blank Belmont Abbey 9-0 Tuesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University tennis teams did not lose a set Tuesday, claiming 9-0 victories over Belmont Abbey College Tuesday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The Wingate women improve to 9-5 overall, while the Bulldog men are 9-3 overall.

Wingate allowed Belmont Abbey only seven games in seven matches. Belmont Abbey only dressed five players, so the Bulldogs picked up default victories at the number three doubles flight and the number six singles flight.

Bulldog junior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) was one of three Wingate players to win two matches on the court Tuesday. In the number one singles, the All-SAC performer defeated Belmont Abbey senior Alex Cook 6-2, 6-1. Earlier in the day, Stasikelis teamed with freshman Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) to defeat Cook and freshman Marielle McLaurin 8-2 in the number one doubles contest.

Ferguson defeated McLaurin 6-1, 6-1 at the number two singles flight. Wingate senior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) was the other Bulldog to win two matches. She blanked Belmont Abbey sophomore Molly Gwaltney 6-0, 6-1 at the number three singles position. In doubles, Alberghini and sophomore Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) defeated Gwaltney and freshman Abby Poetker 8-0.

The Bulldogs lost only four games Tuesday to pick up the easy NCAA Division II Southeast Region victory. Wingate sophomore Bruno Pudence (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Belmont Abbey sophomore Patrick Noelke 6-0, 6-1 at the number one singles position. Pudence paired with classmate Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) to defeat Crusaders Trey Ennis and Kemal Hinton 8-0 at the number two doubles flight.

This week’s South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, Lichtenstein topped Belmont Abbey freshman Damien Nelson 6-1, 6-1 in the number two singles match. Wingate did not lose a game at the number three through number six singles’ flights.

Both Wingate teams will return to SAC play this weekend with two big road matches. The Bulldogs visit Brevard College Friday for a 2 p.m. contest. Wingate will face Mars Hill College Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Belmont Abbey visits Lees-McRae College Friday for a 3 p.m. Conference Carolinas tennis twin bill.
